Boxer Coat Colors

There can be a lot of confusion and misunderstanding
about the coat colors of boxers. You will be able to
have a better understanding in the
materials shown here.

Following the information about the
coat colors of boxers, you are invited to also
have an understanding of the terms used in describing
the general appearance of the boxer as being:
flashy, semi-flashy or one having a black mask.

Coat Colors of A Boxer

A fawn can range from a very light tan to a deep red color often referred to as mahogany.

A brindle is a fawn boxer with black stripe pattern over the body. The stripe pattern varies from sparse (1-2 stripes on the dog) to a more dense stripe pattern covering the majority of the body.

A reverse brindle is most often referred to as a brindle boxer where the stripe pattern is so dark, it is the dominating color in a coat. It appears as if the boxer has fawn stripes instead of black stripes-which is why it is considered to be a reverse.

A sealed reverse brindle is most commonly referred to as a "Black Boxer". There is no such thing as a black boxer since the boxer breed does not carry the black gene. A sealed reverse brindle is when a boxer has such heavy stripe pattern that the brindle dominates the fawn and only in certain lighting can the fawn be seen underneath the brindle pattern. Usually the fawn is the darker mahogany color instead of the lighter fawn and it could be seen around the withers, ears, chest or maybe the underside of the dog.

**PLEASE BE AWARE OF BREEDERS WHO ARE ADVERTISING RARE BLACK BOXERS - THESE BOXERS ARE EITHER BRED WITH ANOTHER BREED TO CREATE BLACK IN THE LINE (WHICH MEANS IT IS NOT A PUREBRED BOXER) OR IT IS A REVERSE THAT A BREEDER IS TRYING TO SELL AT A HIGHER COST. WHEN A BREEDER CLAIMS TO HAVE "RARE" BOXERS, CONSIDER THAT THEY REALLY DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING WHICH CAN RESULT IN POOR QUALITY, UNHEALTHY PUPPIES, OR THEY ARE "FALSE ADVERTISING'.**

A White Boxer is all white or they may have patches of fawn or brindle on one or more of the following areas on their body; ears, around eyes, top of head, on the back or even the base of tail, but rarely on the side of the body and no more than 1/3 (which is very much). The white Boxer does not have the typical black mask.

**A WHITE BOXER IS NOT CONSIDERED ALBINO AND THEY ARE NOT RARE EITHER**

Check is a term for a brindle or fawn dog with approximately 50% white. The white will be on the same places as on a flashy Boxer, but to a greater extent. They may have white on the thighs going all the way across the back, or white collar that goes over on to the shoulders and back or across the forehead to meet the white on the face. It may even be that the colored patch on the back resembles a "saddle" with white all around it.

Definition of Flashy vs Semi Flashy vs Black Mask

Flashy - A fawn or brindle Boxer with white markings covering up to 1/3 of the body ideally, but sometimes a little more. The white markings can be found as one or more of these: white chest, white collar, white between eyes and on the muzzle, white socks and a white tipped tail for those who have long tails.

Semi-Flashy – A term used to refer to a boxer who may only exhibit white markings on the face, chest and legs.

Black Mask - a fawn or brindle Boxer with little or no white. If there is any white, it will appear on one or more of these places: spot on the chest, tips of toes, but rarely the whole foot, or has black mask.

Traditional or Classical are the same thing.

The mahogany color in either the fawn, brindle or reverse brindle, are never considered as traditional or classical.  This is NOT the "traditional" color.  Those deep red mahogany colors are out there but are not as common as the other shades of fawn, but they are NOT rare.  Mahogany doesn't come in different shade of fawn. It holds only one shade of its own.

**PLEASE BE AWARE OF THE BREEDERS WHO CLAIM THAT THEIR ENTIRE LITTER IS MAHOGANY WHEN YOU CAN SEE PERFECTLY WELL THAT THE LITTER SHOWS DIFFERENT SHADES OF FAWN OR SHADES OF FAWN IN THE BRINDLES. THEY ARE OUT THERE TO SELL YOU A PUP THAT IS NOT A MAHOGANY, LETTING YOU BELIEVE YOU HAVE SOMETHING THAT IS NOT.**
